Blue Sky Dreaming
Have you noticed how your best ideas come when you are in the shower? Or while you are out running? The solution to that problem you tried solving earlier seems so obvious now. We all have those places or activities which seem to cause ideas to pour out of us (mine are when I'm driving or waiting at airports).
Neuroscientists say that the reason for this is that the release of dopamine is essential for creativity. Dopamine is the brain chemical that allows us to have feelings of pleasure, motivation, focus, and concentration. Our thinking becomes more creative as more dopamine is released. Which explains why blissing out on a sun lounger by the pool or enjoying a picturesque walk or run brings out our brilliant ideas.
So if during your break you are suddenly thinking about your business and are brimming with new ideas, don’t be surprised. This is a good thing - let it happen, who knows where it will lead.
The key is to jot these ideas down for action later on.
I am a pen and paper girl so whenever I travel I always take a gorgeous notebook with me and it’s my ideas journal. I have been using the same one for ages and I love looking back at my thoughts. You could do this too – something light and portable to keep in your beach bag so that you can scribble down those ideas as they pop into your head.
Failing that, the back of a coaster, napkin or whatever comes to hand will do – I know for a fact that the iconic Vodafone logo was conjured up on the back of a beer coaster!
Remember to set yourself a reminder to ensure you look back over your notes on your return to work. You don’t want those brilliant ideas to fade as fast as your tan!
